Now that you’ve gotten a taste of Scripture Writing through the Psalm 27 study, let’s spend the next month writing about Husbands & Wives in Scripture.
Husbands & wives.
That can be a pretty intense subject.
How do you learn to be a good wife? How do you be a good wife when you have a husband who is hard to live with?
There are so many books and gurus out there who offer advice about marriage, how do you whittle it down to the truly useful information?
Where will we start writing scriptures about Husbands & Wives?
A few years ago The Diligent Woman ran a series of Proverbs Every Day posts that were themed. One of them focused on Proverbs that talked about or would help the husband-wife relationship. There were more than 30 verses, just in PROVERBS!
As 2 Peter 1:3 says, God has “granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.”
So trusting that, we will begin at the beginning, and see what we can learn from the Bible about the marriage relationship.
The Simplicity and Complexity of the Husband and Wife relationship
As Genesis shows us, God created man and woman, and in so doing, created the first marriage. The easy part is how to define marriage. The hard part is how to live in it, day by day. Fortunately, God has given us everything we need!
As we go through these scriptures about husbands & wives, we will look at examples of couples who did things well and some who did things poorly. We will read what we are told about these couples and see what can be learned by their choices. We will also read verses that lay foundations for how couples should be. There will be verses that teach about Christ’s love for the church and how that is to be reflected in the marriage relationship. Our verses will even help us to see how submission is to work in the marriage relationship -what submission is and what it is not.
Will you join us for the next 31 days to write about husbands & wives?
Even if you are not married, this study can help you understand God’s relationship with His people since it is so often compared to a marriage. General teachings about how to manage any relationship can also be gained. It is not only a study for the married or about to be married.
Relationships can be hard. Marriages go through ups and downs. When we do not have the same goals spiritually, financially, and for our family, it’s even harder. Jump in and study God’s word to see what He has to teach about husbands & wives.
Sharing these scriptures should help us to know better how God wants our relationships to work.
For the next few weeks, spend each day writing scriptures that teach about Husbands & Wives.
I encourage you to go beyond just writing the verses too. This is a study that creates natural questions for application. What did it take for them to do what they did? Is there something to be learned by applying the opposite of what these examples did? Even though the context is marriage, how can I apply these things to my behavior and choices alone? What lessons can I see they learned from their choices?
The writing of the scriptures alone will give you a deeper understanding than just reading them. Meditating on those scriptures through the day AND praying that God will help you see how to apply them in your life will take you even deeper.
Enjoy!

Here are daily prompts for February 1st - 8th (I will add new prompts each week.)
These prompts may also include suggestions for how to mark the verses using a Bible Marking Guide. Skip that part if you aren’t familiar with it or prefer not to write in your Bible or over your scripture writing. If you’d like to learn more about Bible Marking, you can do that in this post.
February 1st - 8th
Scripture Writing - Husbands & Wives
Day 1
Genesis 2:18, 21-25
God presents Eve to Adam. As you write, notice his response to God's gift for him.
Bible marking throughout this theme will be PINK because we are focusing on the relationship. If other colors are warranted, I will note those. So, unless otherwise noted, use PINK.
Scripture Writing - Husbands & Wives
Day 2
Genesis 16:4-6, 9 and 21:9-13
Two instances where Abraham listened to Sarah. One turned out badly, the other turned out as God intended. Note the differences in the situations and see what you can learn.
Scripture Writing - Husbands & Wives
Day 3
Genesis 24:67 & 26:6-11
Today we look at Isaac and Rebekah. Where they began and how their relationship was before their favoritism of their sons came between them.
Their interaction with King Abimelech is interesting because of Abraham and Sarah having a similar situation with an earlier Abimelech. "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree" was true in Bible times too!
Note something good from Isaac and Rebekah's relationship that you can work to imitate in your own marriage.
Scripture Writing - Husbands & Wives
Day 4
Genesis 29:18, 20
Jacob and Rachel start out in such a lovely way. Laban's interference causes so much trouble for all of them going forward. But the sweet beginning certainly shows us where so many love stories got their inspiration!
One thing I note as I go through scripture, men mistreating women is not the norm. The norm is men adoring their women. There are exceptions, but they are just that, exceptions.

Day 5
Hebrews 11:23 & Exodus 2:1-4
Usually we read these verses the focus is on Moses. How he was placed where God could use him.
But if we will notice, the focus is actually on his parents - Jochebed and Amram (Ex.6:20; Num. 26:59).
It was the faith of Amram and Jochebed that saved Moses from the Pharaoh's edict to slay all baby boys.
It was the faith of his parents that hid him for three months.
It says in Hebrews 11:23 "they were not afraid of the king's commandment". This couple trusted God with their family, even in very dangerous times.
Is there something we can learn from them?
What about their faith in each other? What about their joint commitment to God's will? God doesn't say Jochebed was the one with the faith, even though she is the one we see in Exodus doing the actions. God shows us this couple worked together to the saving of their son. Further reading of the story shows they also taught their children to have a God-fearing attitude because Miriam could be trusted to watch over this baby who was alive against the orders of the king.
Yes, this is how Moses came to be in place in Egypt for all that was to come later. But don't overlook the example of his parents who saved his life initially!
Cross-reference the scriptures I noted above that give the names of Moses' parents.
Scripture Writing - Husbands & Wives
Day 6
Judges 14:15-17
In Judges 14 we see Samson choose a wife. He is determined to marry a woman of the Philistines.
His parents object, but the Lord was going to use the relationship as a means against the Philistines (Jdg. 14:4) Our verses today focus on the newly married couple.
Through the course of events, we see what type of character this woman had.
What can be learned about the power of a crying wife and nagging? Is this is a good use of power over a husband?
As noted before - use PINK as your color to mark today's verses.
Scripture Writing - Husbands & Wives
Day 7
Ruth 3:9-14
In the story of Ruth, we learn a great deal about her character. The scene we are writing today shows both her character and that of Boaz. See what traits you can pinpoint based on the way they interact with one another.
Scripture Writing - Husbands & Wives
Day 8
1 Samuel 25:23-31
Abigail!
I LOVE Abigail!
In today's writing, we are focusing on what her response to the crisis created by her husband. Note what she says about him, what she takes responsibility for, and how she encourages David to think about his actions.
With both men, she shows submission the whole time. She shows a knowledge of God's law as well as politics of the time. David recognizes her wisdom in the way she handles the situation and him. She is an excellent lesson for wives in dealing with their own husbands and other men who are wrapped up in heightened emotions.
What stands out to you about what she says in this passage?
